How to take advantage of a small space

When designing spaces no matter its size, one of the first things one has to keep in mind is its functionality. The way we use the room will determine the pieces of furniture we need to add or take away. My friend’s new apartment in the heart of Miami has the most amazing view. But after moving in with some of her old pieces of furniture, she noticed that no matter the view, the space felt small and somewhat limited. So I went in with a simple plan on some things we need to add in order to take advantage of the space and view of her living room and entryway.

Editing the room

It might sound like a very risky option, but sometimes less is more. The first suggestion I gave my friend was to eliminate a big chair she had in the corner of the living room. It was the first thing one would notice when entering her apartment instead of the view. I substituted this chunky seat with a lighter chair from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. This Flynn Mid-Century Chair Wood with Linen Upholstery was ideal for this spot and for my friend’s style. She loved pieces of furniture and accessories that evoke those from 1950’s.

She also used to have a storage ottoman in the center of this room but it was also taking too much space. After moving this piece to another place, I replace it with a side table. The Better Homes & Gardens Montclair Round Accent Table, Black Finish available at Walmart was big enough for some drinks or to be set at the center of the room.

No entryway is too small

No matter the size of an entryway, one should always pay extra attention to this area because it is what greets our guests. My friend had a chunky table that seemed to be to heavy for this wall. I replaced it with lighter console that had the same style as the Flynn Mid-Century Chair. The Better Homes & Gardens Reed Mid Century Modern Console Table, (Pecan) available at Walmart fit perfectly on this wall and took less visual space than its predecessor.

To finish this area I created a gallery wall with a mix of frames from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. With some vintage cameras from my friend’s amazing collection and a couple of black and white printouts from some of her photos, I was able to gather all these new pieces together.

With these small changes, visitors will get the best view of both the city and my friend’s apartment and style. No matter how contemporary this setting was, adding some Mid Century Modern inspired pieces into the decor added an additional layer of interest. Mixing old with new and keeping things simple was the key in taking advantage of this small space. When redecorating a room, do you go for contemporary or would you rather mix?
